Day 36 of 365: A tribute to Barbie Hsu (Shan Cai)
 
Last February 2nd, a Facebook post announced Barbie Hsu's death. I wasn't shocked – fake news is rampant online – but curiosity pushed me to Google it. The confirmation hit hard. Devastated and unsure, I'm still grappling with the inevitability of death. Over the years, more and more familiar faces from my childhood have succumbed to this natural process, and I've begun to understand that our time on Earth is finite, whether we spend it slowly or quickly. What truly matters is how we impact the lives of others, big or small.
 
I never knew Barbie Hsu personally, but I grew up with San Chai. San Chai, the unforgettable character from the phenomenal Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden, was played by Barbie Hsu. For me, as a struggling teenager navigating high school, she was a beacon of hope. I remember a time our TV broke, and I listened to the radio broadcast just to catch every episode. That little box held lessons about love, patience, sacrifice, and friendship – lessons that shaped me. I could write a whole book about San Chai, but I'll leave that for another time.
 
Jerry Yan, who played Dao Ming Si, perfectly captured the sentiment: “Thankful for meeting you,” read Yan’s translated message. “In your carefree, childlike years, you always said to live everyday as if it were your last and enjoy it to the fullest.” His words resonated deeply. “I hope this time, you will go slowly, and from now on, in another world, there will be no troubles, and the years will be peaceful."
 
Barbie Hsu's passing reminded me of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Her portrayal of San Chai touched countless lives, myself included. While her physical presence is gone, the impact she made will forever remain. The lessons she taught through San Chai will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in peace, Barbie Hsu. Thank you for San Chai. ❤️🙏

In my dream, I found myself standing in the vast expanse of an airport. The hustle and bustle of travelers around me created a cacophony of sounds, but my focus was solely on the other side of the terminal. Dream - Quezon 2024 - 03-04-2024

In my dream, it felt like we were in a different world, accompanied by our family. It felt like we were inside the terminal of an airplane. I saw my cousin, Seek, sleeping on a throw pillow, looking uncomfortable. We decided to move him to a different spot, but he was still fast asleep. I couldn't help but laugh at how he looked while sleeping.   Suddenly, an announcement was made that it was time for us to board the airplane. We hurriedly walked towards the boarding area, but the path we took was made of wooden planks with ankle-deep floodwater. Some people were walking on an elevated bridge on the other side.
