Growth Mindset - Acceptance? More Like "Acceptance-ception! - 10/17/2024

Acceptance? More Like "Acceptance-ception!" 🤯

Okay, let's talk about growth mindset. You know, that whole "you can learn anything if you put your mind to it" thing? It's a great concept, but sometimes, like that time I blanked during a brown bag session, it can feel like a whole lot of pressure.

We were all supposed to come up with one word that embodies growth mindset. Easy peasy, right? Wrong. My brain was already overflowing with information from the previous topic, which was about revisiting a process in a tool we're using at work. I'm talking full-blown information overload. It was like my brain was a traffic jam on C5 during rush hour, and every new piece of information was trying to squeeze onto the already packed road.

So, when the manager called for our one-word contributions, I was a deer in headlights. My colleagues were throwing out words like "resiliency," "open-minded," and "humble." I was desperately searching for something, anything, but my brain had gone completely blank. It was like my vocabulary had been replaced with a bunch of random cat videos.

Then, out of nowhere, I blurted out "Acceptance."

Yeah, I know. Not exactly the most inspiring word for growth mindset, right? It's like saying "The one word that embodies love is... beige."

But here's the thing: in my defense, I was already mentally checked out from the entire discussion. I was so exhausted from the information overload that I just wanted to go home and eat kwek-kwek (street food).

During my commute after work, my brain had finally had a chance to decompress, and I realized what I really wanted to say. "Acceptance" is actually a pretty good word for growth mindset, but for a different reason. It's not about accepting the status quo, but about accepting your mistakes and learning from them. It's about accepting that you're not perfect, that you're going to make mistakes, and that's okay. It's about accepting that growth is a process, not a destination.

So, yeah, maybe my initial "Acceptance" was a bit of a brain fart. But it actually led me to a deeper understanding of the concept.

Now, I'm curious, what's your one-word embodiment of growth mindset? Is it something like "grit," "curiosity," or maybe even "kwek-kwek"? (Okay, maybe not that last one.)
